Indonesia Joins BRICS as Its Newest Member
BRICS chair Brazil recently announced that Indonesia has officially become the latest full member of the bloc. This move came just three months after Indonesia expressed interest in joining, following the rise of President Prabowo Subianto to power in October 2023. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry confirmed that BRICS leaders endorsed Jakarta's membership at the 2023 Johannesburg Summit. Indonesia’s membership was approved by consensus in 2024, aligning with the expansion guidelines agreed upon in Johannesburg.
Brazil welcomed Indonesia, noting its status as Southeast Asia’s largest economy and most populous nation. In return, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry highlighted its commitment to contributing actively to the BRICS agenda, focusing on issues like economic resilience and food security. Indonesia views its BRICS membership as a strategic step to foster collaboration among emerging economies, advocating for equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development.
This marks Indonesia's first major diplomatic move under President Prabowo, who aims to ensure Indonesia’s role as a neutral, global ally. Prior to officially applying, Indonesia had been hesitant under the previous government of Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. However, with the country’s new leadership, Indonesia sees BRICS as a platform to enhance its influence in global decision-making.
Analysts suggest that BRICS membership could provide Indonesia with access to funding through the New Development Bank (NDB), which has approved $32.8 billion in financing. Additionally, Indonesia hopes to strengthen trade and investment ties with BRICS members.
With Indonesia’s entry, BRICS now includes 10 members, including Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, in addition to the original five: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
